The mountaineering world has lost one of its most extraordinary figures. On July 30, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time, an avalanche struck a ten-member international expedition on Broad Peak (8,051 m / 26,414 ft) in Pakistan's Karakoram range. On August 1, expedition operator Elite Exped confirmed that all ten climbers had died, among them Nirmal Purja ''Nimsdai'' — the Nepal-born mountaineer, former British Special Boat Service (SBS) operative, and star of Netflix's 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

Purja redefined what endurance could achieve, summiting all fourteen of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in six months and six days in 2019 — smashing a previous record of roughly seven years and ten months. In 2021, he was part of the first team to summit K2 in winter. Across his career, he was equally known for risking his own safety to rescue stranded climbers from high-altitude "death zones."
As we honor Nimsdai and the nine companions who died alongside him — Pur Bahadur Gurung ("Yukta"), Nima Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Sohail Sakhi, Mallory Geis, Nadhira Al Harthy, and Wang Zhong — it is worth examining the mountain conditions that contributed to the tragedy, and the broader climate pressures now reshaping the Hindu Kush Himalaya and Karakoram region.
What Happened on Broad Peak
The expedition was climbing between Camp 2 and Camp 3, at roughly 6,600 meters — a section known among high-altitude climbers as an exposed "trap zone" prone to slides. Satellite GPS trackers carried by the climbers recorded sudden, sharp descents at the moment of the avalanche: Mallory Geis's device dropped roughly 540 meters, while Nadhira Al Harthy's dropped more than 1,600 meters, consistent with climbers being swept downhill by moving snow before their signals went silent.
Conditions in the days before the avalanche had been unstable. Climbers who left the mountain earlier in the week reported a major windstorm on July 18 that left the slopes heavily loaded with wind-blown and unconsolidated snow. Most other expeditions had already abandoned their summit attempts and left Broad Peak base camp because of the deteriorating forecast.
Pakistani rescue teams, working with military helicopters, recovered the first three bodies — Nadhira Al Harthy, Pur Bahadur Gurung, and Mallory Geis — on July 31, hampered by poor weather. Elite Exped confirmed on August 1 that none of the ten climbers had survived. Recovery operations for the remaining climbers continued into the following days.

The Science: How a Warming Climate Is Destabilizing the 8,000-Meter Peaks
It is important to be precise here: no single avalanche can be attributed to climate change alone — sudden wind-loading and unstable snowpack, of the kind reported on Broad Peak in the weeks before the tragedy, are a recognized hazard in the Karakoram regardless of long-term warming. But the broader climate trends reshaping the region are well documented, and they are making these hazards more frequent and less predictable.
1. The "Karakoram Anomaly" Is Under Strain
For decades, glaciologists have documented the "Karakoram Anomaly": unlike most of the world's glaciers, and unlike the neighboring Himalaya, glaciers in the Karakoram range have remained largely stable — and in some cases even grown — thanks to a regional atmospheric circulation pattern (sometimes called the Karakoram vortex) that produces anomalous summer cooling and heavy winter snowfall. Researchers who first identified the phenomenon caution, however, that it is not expected to persist indefinitely under continued global warming, and that its long-term durability remains an open scientific question.
2. Warmer Summer Windows Are Destabilising Snowpack
Climbers traditionally favor a narrow window from mid-to-late July for Karakoram ascents, when weather is most predictable. Unusually warm spells and heavy snow loading, however, can transform dry powder into heavy, wet-snow slides capable of sweeping entire slopes — precisely the kind of instability that climbers on Broad Peak reported in the days before the disaster.
3. Permafrost Thaw and Structural Failure
At extreme altitude, permafrost acts as a kind of natural glue holding rock faces and hanging glaciers together. As mean temperatures rise across high-altitude Asia, thawing permafrost is increasingly linked to unpredictable rockfalls and serac collapses, turning once-routine climbing routes into higher-risk terrain.
4. Accelerated Glacial Retreat Across the Wider Region
While the Karakoram itself has been a partial exception, the broader Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region is retreating rapidly. A 2023 assessment by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) found that HKH glaciers lost ice 65% faster between 2011 and 2020 than in the previous decade. A follow-up ICIMOD report published in March 2026 found that regional ice-loss rates have doubled since 2000, and that under current emissions trajectories the glaciers could lose up to 80% of their volume by 2100 — a system that supplies water to roughly 1.6 billion people downstream.
Nimsdai's Environmental and Human Legacy
Purja was not only a record-breaker. He was a committed advocate for mountain ecosystems and for the Indigenous high-altitude communities that make Himalayan and Karakoram climbing possible:
High-Altitude Cleanups: Through his foundation and cleanup initiatives, Purja helped retrieve tons of abandoned oxygen canisters, plastic waste, and legacy debris from K2 and Everest.
Elevating Sherpa Dignity: He used his global platform to push for recognition, fair compensation, and safety protections for the Nepali and Pakistani guides who bear the frontline risk of climbing in an increasingly unstable environment.
A Global Climate Voice: Purja regularly reminded audiences that the melting of the so-called "Third Pole" — the largest reserve of frozen freshwater outside the polar ice caps — threatens water security for well over a billion people downstream.
