Andy Vermaut
Andy Vermaut is a Belgian climate advocate, human-rights defender and civil-society leader with many years of experience in environmental action, public engagement and international cooperation. He served for three years as a European Climate Pact Ambassador, promoting climate awareness, biodiversity, responsible environmental policy and citizen participation.
He is the chair of Postversa, a Belgian organisation working on fundamental rights, climate responsibility, social justice and democratic participation. He also chairs the World Council for Public Diplomacy and Community Dialogue, through which he promotes international dialogue, peace, sustainability and cooperation across cultural and institutional boundaries.
Andy Vermaut initiated and helped realise approximately 11 hectares of woodland (forest) in Oostende, Belgium, through the Struikroversbos, the Lappersforest Oxygen Factory and the Rainbow Charlotte Gyselbos. These forest areas are situated around the Karperstraat, Stuiverstraat and Grintweg and are now managed by Volkscoöperatieve BuitenGoed. The projects brought citizens, volunteers and organisations together around tree planting, biodiversity, remembrance and long-term climate responsibility.
He was a Belgian jury member for the My Name Is Climate Film Festival in 2025 and supports the use of film, education and public communication to make climate change understandable and relevant to diverse audiences.
In 2026, Andy Vermaut received the International Human Rights Committee Award in Alton, United Kingdom. The award was personally presented by Emir Muhammed Bin Salih of Ghana and Nasim Malik during an international gathering attended by more than 50,000 people.
Andy Vermaut believes that climate action and human rights are inseparable. His work focuses on biodiversity, water, climate justice, human dignity, peaceful dialogue and the rights of present and future generations.
