Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj in Amsterdam. While his artistic creations, including the iconic statue of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, are celebrated worldwide, we were deeply impressed by his holistic commitment to sustainable living, extending far beyond his awe-inspiring sculptures. His passion for cycling, in particular, resonated with our mission to promote eco-friendly practices. During his visit, My Name is Climate Foundation Founder and Filmmaker, Lalit Bhusal from The Netherlands, had the opportunity to accompany Arun to Amsterdam's newly built bicycle parking facility at Stationsplein. He was amazed by its sheer scale and innovative design, a testament to the city's dedication to cycling infrastructure. The experience sparked a lively conversation about the power of the bicycle as a tool for positive change.
Arun, an avid cyclist himself, believes that cycling is not merely a mode of transport; it's a way of life. He emphasised the numerous benefits of choosing two wheels over four:
Reducing our carbon footprint: Cycling is a zero-emission mode of transportation, helping to combat climate change and air pollution.
Improving our health: Cycling is a fantastic way to stay active, improve cardiovascular health, and boost overall well-being. Arun is a living testament to this, maintaining remarkable fitness in his [age] years.
Connecting with our surroundings: Cycling allows us to experience our cities and nature in a more intimate way, fostering a deeper appreciation for our environment.
But Arun's vision extends beyond the bicycle. He is a strong advocate for sustainable living in all its forms. He has taken significant steps to promote this ethos, including:
Giving back to nature: On his own land, he has created a beautiful lake, demonstrating his commitment to restoring and preserving the environment.
Leading by example: Arun embodies sustainable living through his simple vegetarian diet and active lifestyle.
Arun's enthusiasm for cycling and sustainable living is contagious. He envisions a world where cycling is the norm, where cities are designed for people, not cars, and where communities live in harmony with nature. His vision aligns perfectly with our own at My Name is Climate Foundation.
A Call from Karnataka:
Our plans to further explore sustainable initiatives in the Netherlands with Arun were delightfully interrupted by an important event. He received an emergency call from the Karnataka government, requesting his presence at the Rajyotsava Awards ceremony on 1st November 2024.
We were thrilled to learn that Arun was being bestowed with this prestigious award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of art. The Karnataka Rajyotsava Award is the second highest civilian honour in the state, conferred annually on individuals who have made significant contributions to Kannada language, culture, and society.
Congratulations, Arun!
While we were sad to postpone our planned sustainable tour, we wholeheartedly congratulate Arun on this well-deserved recognition. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to sustainable living are an inspiration to us all.
Inspired Action:
Arun's visit has inspired us to further promote cycling and sustainable living as powerful solutions. We believe that governments, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play in creating a more sustainable world. Here are some key actions we can take:
Invest in cycling infrastructure: Build safe and convenient cycling paths, secure bike parking facilities, and implement bike-sharing programs.
Promote cycling culture: Encourage cycling through public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community events.
Choose cycling whenever possible: Make cycling a part of your daily routine for commuting, errands, and leisure activities.
Support sustainable communities: Advocate for policies that promote sustainable development, green spaces, and eco-friendly living.
Let us all be inspired by Arun Yogiraj's multifaceted approach to sustainability, from his artistic creations to his personal choices. By embracing his passion for cycling, his commitment to environmental restoration, and his advocacy for sustainable living, we can create healthier communities, reduce our environmental impact, and pedal towards a brighter tomorrow.
