DOG WASTE ALERT: Protecting Almere’s Children & Our Shared Environment

We often view pollution as a global, abstract crisis happening elsewhere. Yet, environmental neglect begins at our doorstep. Before we look outward to save the planet, we must look at the ground beneath our feet.

In Almere, particularly on the daily routes to Shree Ganesh School, children are navigating a minefield of dog waste. This is not merely a nuisance; it is a public health hazard and a symptom of disconnectedness from our local environment.

The Hidden Danger Indoors & Outdoors

When a child steps in waste, the problem comes home. Harmful bacteria like E. coli are tracked onto the floors of our living rooms and classrooms. Pollution literally crosses our threshold.

Moreover, left on the ground, this waste acts as a pollutant. High in nitrogen and acidity, it burns grass, damages local biodiversity, and seeps into groundwater.

A Note to Dog Owners: Let’s Help Each Other

Let us be clear: we love animals. At the My Name is Climate Foundation, we celebrate the bond between humans and their pets. This message is not against dogs; it is a call for responsible care.

Most dog owners in Almere are responsible, but the negligence of a few affects the reputation of all. We encourage a culture of polite support:

  • Be Prepared: Always carry extra bags.

  • Help a Neighbour: If you see a fellow owner without a bag, offer them one. It’s a small gesture that keeps our streets clean.

  • Speak Up Gently: A friendly reminder to pick up can change behaviour without conflict.

Action Taken

We cannot wait for change; we must create it. This issue has now been formally reported to the Municipality of Almere Centre. We have requested immediate cleanup of hotspots around schools and better signage to support residents.

A Shared Pledge

My mission is to humanise environmental issues. Sustainability isn't just about carbon charts; it's about respecting the street where our children walk.

Cleaning up after a pet is a fundamental act of stewardship. It sends a message that we value our neighbours, our children’s safety, and the integrity of our shared home.
